Beef Net Zero Webinar

Beef Net Zero? Carbon Sequestration and Storage: Opportunities and Realities in Western Canada.

Can carbon sequestration and storage in crop and grasslands pave a pathway to Beef Net Zero?

Reaching net zero in beef cattle production systems has been focused on the reduction of burps and belches (enteric methane emissions).  But burps and belches are just one piece of the puzzle.  For net zero in beef systems to become reality, all greenhouse gases and the complex lands in the system need to be considered in the equation.

In this webinar, Dr. Tim McAllister, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, AB will explore the value of 'Nature Based Solutions' like sequestering carbon in crop and grasslands.  Beef cattle production is part of a complex system that includes grasslands and crop lands and not all land is equal in its ability to capture and store carbon.  Tim will cover the realities of the impact of soil type, climatic conditions, and land management practices that all play a role in carbon sequestration and storage in agricultural systems.

Regionally based management practices must be developed to realize the full value of carbon capture and storage solutions. It is even more critical that carbon stores that are already within these ecosystems are preserved, as land conversion only further increases carbon emissions.  What is our path forward and how can you as a producer be part of the solution?
