The Economics of Prairie Cover Crop Grazing and The Economics of Intercropping Peas into Cereals

The cover crop grazing study simulates 25 operations under different cover crop yield and price scenarios to give the average net financial return on cover crops if grazing is the only way of trying to pay for the seed and establishment costs.

The intercropping study looks at whether growing a barley-pea or oat-pea crop can increase an operation’s net return compared to a barley or oat monocrop. The intercrops generally have higher nutritional value, so adjusting the winter feed ration and reducing fertilizer costs through the peas’ Nitrogen fixation may make operations more profitable.
